Biography I
am an Irish singer-song writer living in England. I have recorded quite a
few songs on my computer with acoustic instruments, mostly melancholy,
60’s, acoustic, minimal no-fi, harmony, singer-song writery sounds with
electronicie bedroom blips when I can afford it. My material involves lots
of different instrumentation – vocal harmonies (which I love), acoustic
guitar/bass, acoustic slide guitar, penny whistle, indian tablas,
bongos, radio, percussion, harmonica, shaky things, boomwhackers, triangle. I
love experimenting with different musical styles and genres, and as a result the
sound tends to be a very much left of centre affair, from very slow majestic
vocal harmony pieces with interweaving guitar/keyboard riffs, to strong
melodic pop with catchy hookable choruses fuelled with soaring harmonies.
I would say the sort of thing I do is somewhere between 1960’s Simon
& Garfunkel folk mixed with the feeling of Mercury
Rev’s sense of isolation, with a touch of Nick Drake's vocals and word play complimented with warm vocal harmonies of the
likes of the Kings of Convenience, not to mention
influences from The Red House Painters and Elliott
Smith. Only my closest friends have heard any of my tracks and I am
forever making them copies - I am indebted to Bus Stop Records and Brian Kirk
for increasing my distribution to the USA. I hope you like what I
do and I want to thank you for taking an interest. CreditsAll
songs were written, played, and recorded by Greg Murray (all instruments and
voices - including acoustic guitars/slide, acoustic bass, electronicie sounds,
samples, radio, harmonica.) All instruments recorded in my bedroom using
an old Apple Mac computer through a Carlsboro mixer console with all
instrumentation - analogue in nature. I
want to thank Russell Hawley for his wonderful acoustic drumming (1960's Premier
and handmade Zildjian cymbals), impeccable timing of his shaky things,
percussion, and boomwhackers, and his incredible patience for my insistence in
recording my material in the most unorthodox means possible. I want also to thank Gerry for her support, understanding and love, and for numerous artists that have influenced and inspired me in the past, present and future. I hope you enjoy my songs as much as I enjoyed writing them. - Greg Murray Discography "No Pretending" + "Go Honey" on Bliss Volume 100 compilation cassette Bliss Go Honey 7" EP Elefant Records 2002 You & Me/Watch How You Go/Hide 7" EP Plastic Pancake Records 2002 Edge/Rocketship/Daggers/Slowmo CDEP The Bus Stop Label (BUS064) 2002 No Pretending/Hide/Voyeur/Hand Me Downs CDEP The Bus Stop Label (BUS067) 2002
