The Mars Bastards

Biography

There's something special about Perth, Western Australia, that continues to throw up pop bands in a never ending cycle.  The Mars Bastards played their part in that history, forming around the core songwriting/guitar/vocal duo of Ian Freeman and Jeff Baker.  The two met in 1984 at an early Stems gig and the following year were bashing out their first efforts in The Peppermint Drops.  In 1986, the pair formed The Palisades, but by 1988, having recorded and released their 12" EP "A Month Too Soon", Freeman took the band to Sydney while Baker joined the ever evolving Summer Suns line-up.  A stint in the original formation of The Rainyard was then followed by a reunion of sorts with the returning Freeman - the birth of The Mars Bastards as a recording duo.  It wasn't long before the band expanded into a full-blown live line-up with Gil Bradley (from the latter Palisades) on guitar, Shaun Lohoar (Beekeepers) on drums, and Mark Scarparolo (A Month Of Sundays) on bass.  The band established a formidable live reputation, issued a number of cassette compilations, supported national and international heavyweights, and played live on national radio.  By 1992 it had all ended amidst confusion, unfulfilled promise, and an unreleased album.  Freeman and The Rainyard joined to form mod-popsters HeaderBaker joined and toured with Dom Mariani's DM3, helped out with Perth indie-popsters Showbag! and his own Tokyo 5.  The two now both reside in Melbourne, Victoria and have teamed up with several members of Header on an all new project.
